Senator Chuck Grassley visited Gateway High School on Wednesday to meet with students who are leading the charge on some of the most pressing issues in Iowa education.

The visit featured a formal presentation by Gateway students on chronic absenteeism. Having previously traveled to the Statehouse to share their insights, the students provided the Senator with a comprehensive view of the root causes of absenteeism, along with student-led solutions to improve engagement and attendance.

Senator Grassley requested the tour after hearing about the remarkable impact Gateway students are making as leaders within their community and at the state level. The presentation reflects the school’s strong tradition of student advocacy. In recent years, Gateway students have played a leading role in local and state discussions on:
  • Chronic Absenteeism & Root Causes: Identifying social and economic barriers to attendance while proposing peer-to-peer support models.
  • Cell Phone-Free Learning: Promoting focused, distraction-free environments that support mental health and academic success.
  • Community Walkability: Presenting research on safe, walkable routes to school to ensure all students have reliable access to education.

Since opening in March 2023, Gateway High School has become a model for individualized education within the Ottumwa Community School District. Located on Gateway Drive, the school serves approximately 175 students and prioritizes mental, social, and academic growth.

Gateway is intentionally designed to foster a small-school environment where every student is known, valued, and supported. Its curriculum emphasizes leadership and civic engagement, empowering students to work directly with policymakers and influence the future of education in Iowa.

The Ottumwa Community School District extends its sincere appreciation and is honored to have hosted Senator Grassley. His presence and interest underscore the importance of student voice and highlight the exceptional work of Gateway students and staff in ensuring every Bulldog has the opportunity to be the “Best” they can be.
